With the exception of the African nation of Eritrea, Guantanamo Bay solitary and perhaps a few other places, it’s hard to beat North Korea as a locale where tonight’s 83rd Annual Academy Awards will have ZERO resonance.

There are so many wacky, upside-down paradoxes when it comes to North Korea that it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. But at the end of another crazy week of hints and whispers of Hermit Kingdom news, this Saturday morning it’s actually relatively easy. The operative words are: Supreme. Soap. Opera.

If Kim Jong-un is indeed to be confirmed as heir to the North Korean throne next week, there may be no more dangerous a job right now in the corridors of Pyongyang power than that of his speech writer(s). After a lifetime of anticipation and just one publicly released photo, Kim Jong-il‘s twentysomething tyrant could be set to deliver his country’s version of the famous Martin Luther King speech (“I have a nightmare…?”).

With North Korea seeming to be as far away as ever from returning to the Six-Party Talks, it behooves us to consider any and all possible solutions to the ongoing Korean Peninsula impasse. The latest one to streak across my brain is pretty simple: get a consortium of the world’s biggest commercial TV networks to pool together a wad of cash and offer it up to Kim Jong-il as part of a conditional reality TV show exit package.

Even though they do not celebrate Christmas in North Korea, it would seem permissible – nay, mandatory – for special U.S. Envoy Stephen Bosworth to present Kim Jong-il with an early Yuletide offering when he visits Pyongyang on December 8th. This despite the fact that the Dear Leader is scheduled to be there in spirit only and has a tendency to quickly toss such diplomatic offerings onto a Twin Peaks pile recently visited – and wonderfully detailed – by Beijing prof @prchovanec.
